You don't have to find some mysterious stones to touch to go back in time to the 18th century. Just experience Poldark on a good TV and good sound system, and you'll BE there. From the stunning Cornwall scenery, to the careful attention to detail in the interior sets and locations, to costumes that range from the ragged to the rich, to the glorious music, and their wonderful choices for casting, especially the brilliant Aidan Turner as Ross Poldark, this production has proved to be satisfying for people who have never seen the 70s version or read the novels it is based on, as well as those who have done either or both. There is a wonderful balance in how this has been adapted, perhaps because of both male and female influences. The original author of the books, the late Winston Graham, and Debbie Horsfield, who wrote the script, seem to collaborate to create a touching story that has us entirely sympathetic with Ross's plight as he returns to Cornwall, still recovering from his wounds from fighting the war in America, only to find his situation in tatters in more ways than one. Aidan's portrayal gives us a fascinating Ross who is warmer and easier to like than he is in the books, the first of the 12-book saga having been written 70 years ago. By the end of this first series, we care deeply about what happens to him and everyone close to him. The villains are diabolical, of course, excellently played by their respective actors, while the love story between Ross and Demelza, played beautifully by Eleanor Tomlinson, is incredibly compelling. Her story is made all the more captivating by her sad upbringing by a father who mistreats her, but she is saved from all that by Ross, seemingly on a whim. It's one of the most lovely aspects of the series that we see her progress from a penniless urchin to a young woman with at least some education and much good sense. This is not a replacement for Downton Abbey, as some have suggested, it's an entirely different kind of story, and to me a great deal more exciting, much as I did appreciate Downton. I never tended to watch that show's episodes more than a time or two. I can't say the same about Poldark, a guilty pleasure that seems to never get tiresome no matter how many times I've seen it. So, all I can say is, enjoy! And hope for the second season to come quickly!

I found out in the Radio Times that this was a remake of a 1970s BBC series, and I was most interested by the casting of the lead actor in the title role, so I watched hoping for something good. Basically, set in the 18th Century, Captain Ross Poldark (Being Human's Aidan Turner) was a soldier fighting in the American War of Independence, i.e. the American Revolution, he returns home to Cornwall, England after three years in the army, with a scar on his face. Upon his return Ross finds that his father has died, his estate is in ruins, and his sweetheart Elizabeth (Heida Reed) has found new love and is engaged to his cousin Francis (Kyle Soller), later his uncle Charles (A Clockwork Orange's Warren Clarke) dies. Demelza (Eleanor Tomlinson) is a young woman taking a beating, but Ross rescues her and takes her into his home, he eventually takes her on as his kitchen maid, however over time they develop closer affection, to the point when she becomes pregnant, so they marry and raise a child together. Over the series Ross does at one point try to win Elizabeth back, faces the challenge of making the land productive, he ventures into business opening the tin/copper mines, he cares for his tenants Demelza, Jud Paynter (Philip Davis) and Prudie (Beatie Edney) who rely on him, and he gains enemies, particularly George Warleggan (Jack Farthing). The series is essentially focusing on the challenges and conflicts between the rich and the poor. Also starring Ruby Bentall as Verity, Richard Harrington as Captain Andrew Blamey, original Poldark star Robin Ellis as Reverend Halse and Dr. Luke Norris as Dr. Dwight Enys. Turner is a very good choice for the dashing lead character, he became an instant sex symbol, Tomlinson is likable as his red-headed wife, many of the supporting cast members do well also, I will admit that I am not the biggest fan of programmes set in the olden days, some of the show was dull and slow, but the interesting moments included the mine scenes, the love triangle, the pregnancy and birth, a court case, Demelza and the baby's serious illness, a man trying to ruin Poldark's business, a shipwreck and much more, so it is a worthwhile period drama. Good!

I have read all 12 of the novels several times and was a big fan of the two 1970s series (the second was better than the first). They were the most successful when they stayed true to the novels. The best parts of the second series included dialogue copied straight from Graham. I am pleased that a new generation of viewers will be exposed to the great stories and hope that the show is successful enough that all of the novels get covered. The cinematography is great and studio sets seem to be used only at a minimum, which is an improvement from the 1970s.However, there are a number of flaws. The biggest is the lack of humour. For instance, Jud is a clown. In the novels he unknowingly says lots of hilarious things. The Jud in this series is played absolutely straight. I really haven't laughed at anything yet, though I have only seen the first 2 episodes.They have also got the men's hair and dress wrong. They are trying to make the 1780s look like the 1800s. It is as if they are trying to make it look like Jane Austen. The men would be in wigs or have their hair tied back in queues (pony tails). Ross is supposed to have a hint of copper in his hair, which is symbolic of his interest in mining.Many of the scenes were not shot in Cornwall. I realize that Cornwall does have a shortage of period buildings, but as Bella Poldark points out at the end of the final novel Cornwall is different from the rest of England. It has a magical mystical quality. All of the outdoor shots in the original series were in Cornwall. Trenwith is based on the real Trerice. Why didn't they use it? The original series made a few minor, ill-advised changes of plot (inventing a pregnancy for Demelza and burning Trenwith at the end of the first series and substituting Mary Ann Tamblyn for Rosina Hoblyn in the second) but the characters stayed true to the books. George Warleggan had one love of his life and stayed true to her until after her death. He would not have consorted with Margaret Vosper. They have killed off Nicholas Warleggan. This could turn out to be a problem as he has some significant roles to play in books 5-7. I am guessing that the screen writer did not read all 12 novels, just the two she was covering in this first series, but she really should have read them all, so that she does not box herself into corners for future seasons. The first series excluded Uncle Cary, so it is good that this series brings him back.My biggest gripe is with the new Ross being such a fan of the United States. This is obviously blatant pandering to US viewers of the series. Nowhere in the books does Ross ever say he was fighting on the wrong side. He is critical of the British government but he was never unpatriotic. As a Canadian, who is a historian of 18th century UK politics and Anglo-American relations, I would point out that there was no "wrong side" to that war, no matter what American might say to the contrary.I saw no reason for the subplot in the first episode that Ross was going to move to London because there was nothing for him in Cornwall. Uncle Charles was also very supportive of him rebuilding Nampara and his opinion did not change until the Verity-Blamey affair. Nor did Ross's marriage to Demelza undermine confidence in his business affairs. It really was less of a scandal than one might have expected.In summary, it is not possible to screen every passage from the books. It is necessary to cut elements of the plot for the sake of time. By introducing new material that is not in the novels, there is even less time for the material that is in the novels. The story from the novels is great and this series, like the last, will be most successful the truer it remains to the original story.

Really looking forward to season two. With only eight episodes in season one, it's a series to binge-watch and fall in love with. Each of the main characters are played by the most perfect actors for their roles; the only thing that I could pick at with this series is that it seems so much happens within each episode, which can have it's advantages and disadvantages. Either way, I do recommend watching!
